Screen Scriptwriting course with Linda Dunscombe
Starting 5th May 2012
This is an Introduction to the world of scriptwriting, suitable for beginners and those with some previous experience. The course is for anyone wishing to write for TV, film, short film or comedy. If you want to develop ideas, build strong characters, gain a basic understanding of story narrative and structure and learn how to write authentic dialogue – then this is the course for you.
Course Dates: 5th May, 19th May, 2nd June and 16th June
Course Time: 11am - 3pm
Location: MK Gallery Project Space, 900 Midsummer Boulevard, Milton Keynes, MK9 3QA.
Course Price: £65
To book your place on the course, please email us at contact@mkfilmnetwork.com requesting to attend. A confirmation email will then be sent to you.
Course Overview:
Writing for the screen is all about telling a story and creating memorable characters. During the course we will be looking at ideas; How to find them, how to test them and how to build up the layers of a story. We will look at techniques that can help us to add depth to our characters.
As Scriptwriting is a visual medium we will consider how to show character traits quickly and effectively. We will look at the importance of conflict and motivation in character development and recognise the need to keep dialogue focused and authentic.
We will look at basic structure and understand that scriptwriting has rules and its own format. We will discuss the importance of the opening scenes of a script, and learn to identify how and when to begin a story. Knowing what a story is really about is very important in all forms of writing. We will look at how to write a pitch as well as an outline and a treatment. These are tools that help to focus the idea when structuring a story.
By the end of the course every learner should:
Understand the elements that make up a story
Have the confidence to start building a story idea
Have completed a basic outline of a TV drama or film idea
Written the first draft of the opening scenes
You will learn through a variety of class discussions and practical exercises, working in small groups and pairs as well as individually. You will be encouraged to complete assignments and will be offered positive helpful feedback from the tutor.
